There's no reason to ask Jerry Daugherty what he does in his spare time because he doesn't have any.
A Riverton, Utah, resident who races in the Pro 4 class of the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series presented by GEICO, Daugherty owns the Live Fast Play Dirty Motorsports team that also fields a Pro Lite truck for son Aaron Daugherty, owns and operates a cement contracting business, is the director of the Lucas Oil Regional off-road series in Utah and is active in community affairs.
He's also married, and it's a good thing wife Christie and their four children all share his interests or he might never see them.
"We're busy," Daugherty said in one of those classic bits of understatement, "but we have a passion for the sport. It's a lot of fun helping the locals and helping the series build up here. We get a lot of enjoyment out of helping people so the hard work is okay, and my wife and kids share it with me so that makes it a lot easier."
This is actually the second time around in the sport for Daugherty. He started racing local short-track events in the Denver area in 1975, ran the NASCAR Southwest Tour for one season and decided he didn't like pavement racing, and began doing it in the dirt full-time.
Daugherty had some success in the desert but always felt more at home at short-course venues. He won his class in the final three runnings of the SCORE World Championships at Riverside (California) International Raceway, was considered the man to beat in the Midwest in the 1980s and won the Unlimited Truck class at the 1988 Pikes Peak Hill Climb. Then in 1989, after a good season in the desert, he walked away.
"There was no money in it and all of our equipment was old and used up, so it was time to go back to work," Daugherty said.
He stayed away until 2007, when he built a truck for the Championship Off Road Racing Series that was predecessor to the Lucas Oil series, and in the past two seasons he has finished fourth and fifth in Pro 4 while trying to find a way to bridge the financial gap that exists in all forms of racing.
"It's still a sponsorship-driven deal and the teams with a lot of budget are way ahead of us with smaller budgets," Daugherty said. "The Lucas series is on the right track (with its television exposure and Team Lucas sponsorship approach), but there's still a way to go before we can be self-sufficient.
"We do so much outside of racing with TV and the things we do up here for the community. We try to earn our way. I think we give a lot more back outside of racing than most teams. We've got some good partners and they're keeping us in the game."
